AFSCME’s Got Your Back: Local 2902 donates backpacks to Veterans Leadership Program
Members of AFSCME Local 2902 (Lawrence County) formed an “assembly line” to fill backpacks full of blankets, socks, toiletries, food, and water bottles to donate to the Veterans Leadership Program (VLP) of Western Pennsylvania as part of the “AFSCME’s Got Your Back” program.
“We love to give back to the community and let them know that we’re out there and we want to help in any way that we can,” Local 2902 President Lisa Alexander said.
“If we can help someone that’s either homeless or a veteran or whoever in the community, we’ll do it, because they reflect us, and we reflect them.”
Lisa credits AFSCME District Council 85 Staff Representative Bryan Phenicie with putting them in contact with VLP.
“Partners like yourselves are pivotal to our mission to empower veterans we serve daily,” Chief Development Officer of VLP Toshua Jarrett said.
“When VLP generously receives in-kind donations like the ones that you provided we are able to concentrate our efforts in holistically assisting local veterans and their families.”
The VLP is a nonprofit organization that provides essential housing, employment, and vital supportive services to eligible local veterans, service members, and their families with the goal of improving their self-sufficiency, sustainability, and quality of life.
“Thanks to the generosity of our fellow AFSCME members and by getting the word out on Facebook, we were able to collect a lot of donations,” Local 2902 Vice President Charl Cox said.
“Our local feels strongly about supporting our veterans and especially those in need.”
