FREE WEBINAR SERIES: Become a Union Steward! – Part 3
September 17, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
AFSCME Council 13’s Education & Resources Department is hosting a three-part webinar series on becoming a union steward! Webinars will take place on September 15, 16, and 17 at 6:00 PM each day. This is a members-only training.
Participants MUST commit to attending all three sessions to become a certified Steward but can still participate in individual classes for sharpening skills!
Please see details below for webinar dates, times, and descriptions.
Tuesday, September 15 at 6:00 PM
The first part of this series will serve as an introduction to the various roles and responsibilities of a union steward and important member rights called Weingarten Rights. We will also cover how to read and understand a local union contract or bargaining agreement as the basis for writing formal grievances.
Wednesday, September 16 at 6:00 PM
The second portion of this series will include discussion on the difference between a gripe and a grievance, the five steps involved in handling a grievance, and the important questions to ask when gathering information to put together a potential grievance. This day will focus on how to have hard conversations, interviewing potential grievants and witnesses, and how to use the Grievance Fact Sheet.
Thursday, September 17 at 6:00 PM
The Become a Union Steward series will wrap up with instruction on preparing and executing your presentation to be able to argue grievances. This final webinar will also cover what to expect during a pre-disciplinary conference (PDC) where a steward may be asked to provide representation for fellow union members.
