AFSCME member at Millersville University loses life on the job
On Wednesday, May 17, longtime groundskeeper and AFSCME Local 2421 member at Millersville University Michael Keefer passed away after what appears to be a tragic accident on the job.
Keefer, who worked at Millersville University since 1990, was on a riding mower when it caught on fire, severely injuring him. He later died at Lehigh Valley Hospital around 8 p.m. According to the Lehigh County Coroner’s office, Keefer’s cause of death was thermal injuries and the manner of death was deemed an accident, although the investigation is ongoing.
While the exact details of the accident are unknown, this tragedy has left the AFSCME family, as well as employees at Millersville, shocked and saddened.
“This accident was shocking and tragic. Our hearts go out to Michael’s family, friends and union brothers and sisters,” Director of AFSCME District Council 89 Steve Mullen said.
Council 13 sends its deepest condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy, and will do everything in its power to assure nothing like this ever happens again.
