The Future is Now: AFSCME Local 2329 Leaders Pass the Torch to Next Generation

Longtime leaders of AFSCME Local 2329 at PennWest Edinboro recently made an important decision as retirement approached: before they hit the road, they would pass the torch to the next generation by mentoring new officers.
As the President and Vice President plan their well-earned departures from public service, both chose to pay it forward by engaging younger union activists to build a leadership succession plan. Over the following months, the local swore in and trained up new officers while the current Treasurer remained to support the transition.
Since taking office, Local Union President Bradley Peters and the new leadership team have focused on building their unit into an AFSCME Strong local. Officers have shared responsibilities and are working to develop additional leaders to ensure a well-organized union. This includes recruiting a colleague to serve as Membership Chair and ensuring they get the training they need in the new role.
"With this change in leadership, I am happy to have the support of the former board and our amazing staff rep as we pick up the torch," Bradley said.
"As we continue to build a strong union, I plan to focus on open and concise communication. A strong union is an informed union, and I can't wait to see how strong Local 2329 will be."
A well-functioning local means a strong steward structure, with the new Local 2329 officers and stewards working together to address workplace issues and support members. As new stewards grow into their roles former President Ross Brumagin continues to assist the local as Chief Steward.
Training and leadership development are also a priority. The entire executive board recently attended officer training and have already begun implementing what they learned. Officers are also exploring additional opportunities for steward and Membership Chair training. Most recently, President Peters participated in the statewide Contract Action Campaign kickoff and training in Harrisburg, joining leaders from across Pennsylvania preparing to build a strong campaign for the next state contract.
The local stays connected with members through regular meetings and consistent communication. Membership meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month, and labor-management meetings take place monthly. Officers have also established a local email and online presence to improve communication with members.
Looking ahead, Local 2329 plans to send delegates to the upcoming PA AFL-CIO and AFSCME International conventions. Several officers have also expressed interest in serving on committees and becoming more involved in broader union initiatives.
With a new generation of leaders stepping up and a strong focus on training, engagement, and activism, AFSCME Local 2329 is building a brighter future for its members at PennWest Edinboro with the support of those who came before.
