This is the union difference! Corrections officers of AFSCME Local 1738 at Lancaster County Prison, who work with no air conditioning, won an arbitration award which ruled that the county needed to provide an additional paid day off for the COs when they worked in temperatures of 80 degrees or above. The county attempted to nullify that award, but the union fought back and a judge this week DENIED the county’s request. This came during the week of a brutal and record-breaking heat wave. Corrections officers face inherent dangers on the job; adding the risk of extreme heat is unacceptable. To our brothers and sisters at LCP: stay cool, stay safe, and enjoy some hard-earned time off.
