AFSCME Council 13 stands opposed to any layoffs and outsourcing of its represented employees at state universities, including and especially those that are a result of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education’s (PASSHE) consolidation plan.

As PASSHE Chancellor Daniel Greenstein and the Board of Governors seek to consolidate the universities of California, Clarion, and Edinboro, as well as Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield, the jobs of the workers who keep these and other campuses running are in jeopardy.

These misguided decisions are being made largely without the input of the affected workers or their unions, which is unacceptable. PASSHE must engage with the workers and make a serious effort to save money without eliminating some of the lower paid jobs within the system.

AFSCME has already fought back layoffs of 103 custodial workers at Indiana University (IUP) and Edinboro University, but PASSHE is still targeting dozens of jobs at IUP, Lock Haven University, and Bloomsburg University, with more likely to come.

The custodians, groundskeepers, food service workers, and clerical staff who are at risk due to this plan have been on the front lines of the pandemic for a year. It is outrageous that they are now being threatened with job loss.

We must continue to fight and make our voices heard!
